Dettifoss – the most powerful waterfall in Europe

Dettifoss - a waterfall in North East Iceland by the combination of flow volume, width and height, is one of the most energy-rich waterfalls in Europe.

The Jökulsá á Fjöllum River (Isl. "The Glacier River from the Mountains") flows into the 100-meter-deep Jökulsárgljúfur gorge in northern Iceland, about 30 kilometers before it flows into the Arctic Ocean. An average of 193 m³ of water per second flows over the threshold of the waterfall - this value varies depending on the season. Dettifoss lies a kilometer below the 10 meter high Selfoss waterfall. Through a 100-meter-wide threshold, a gray-brown mass of water flows 45 meters down, which after 2 kilometers flows into the 27-meter-high Hafragilsfoss waterfall. The power produced by the water flowing through Dettifoss averages 85 megawatts.

In 2011, the waterfall was used as a backdrop for the opening scene of Ridley Scott's Prometheus
